Hi Yannis,
Me again! hehe
Let's suppose that the story Jesus told was a literal story. What can we then come to understand from it?
9 "There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. 20 At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores 21 and longing to eat what fell from the rich man's table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.
Well for starters, Jesus seems to imply that rich people who have a nice life in this world will go to hell, and poor people will go to heaven. This must be the case, because Jesus does not tell us that the rich man or the poor man were good or bad people, only that one was rich and one was poor.
The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham's side.
Next we must assume that the angels literally pick up dead men and take them to be next to Abraham.
23 In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24 So he called to him, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.' 25 "But Abraham replied, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony.
Furthermore we learn that in hell you can see those in heaven and converse with them. In fact, for those in heaven you are in seeing distance from hell, and you must watch those in torment.
Also, those who are in hell believe that a single drop of water carried from someone's finger in heaven, may perhaps give them comfort.
Jesus said:
Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.
