Isaiah 4:1 KJV: And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, We will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel: only let us be called by thy name, to take away our reproach.

Is this a prophecy about the return of Polygamy? In Isaiah we show a lot of parrelles with our current world events and cultures. Just looking for some input on the idea of modern day polygamy. Scriptures for  and against.
I believe this is something we see today.

And in that day seven women (seven churches/congregations) shall take hold of one man (Jesus), saying, we will eat our own bread (spiritual food) and wear our own apparel (not the white unspotted garment of the bride of Christ); only let us be called by thy name (Christian), to take away our reproach.

While Zion weeps (v. 3:26)

.. as I see it ..
I'm unsure about this but an Israelite woman desired children - her whole being, lifestyle revolved around children.

Today there is a man shortage. Maybe women brought this situation upon themselves with their careers and high corporate positions and large salary. I personally know women who have attached themselves to one man for him to give them children - and he has 'obliged'.

Genesis 30:23 re Rachel "God has taken away my shame." Or 'reproach' in some translations. Luke 1:25 re Elizabeth "...take away my disgrace (reproach) among the people."

Polygamy is something that men can undertake very easily - they compartmentalise. Unlike women who focus on just one man.
So many in the Bible had more than one wife yet remained in Jehovah's favour. David readily comes to mind.

No, I don't think polygamy will return but it is still happening privately.

Actually, Tessa, "man shortages" are regional. There are many Asian countries where female babies are routinely aborted because the parents want only male babies, causing "woman shortages". This is especially rampant in places such as India and China. So if any females are experiences "man shortages" in their area, they could likely find a mate in these male dominated areas. That's my "know-it-all" statement of the day. LOL!

ANYWAY.....

This is my take on the concept of polygamy:

(scroll down to the 11th subheading)
Lamech said to his wives,

Jacob said to Laban, "Send me on my way so I can go back to my own homeland. 26 Give me my wives and children, for whom I have served

Genesis 28:9
so he went to Ishmael and married Mahalath, the sister of Nebaioth and daughter of Ishmael son of Abraham, in addition to the wives he already had.

Genesis 36:2
Esau took his wives from the women of Canaan

And what about concubines? Besides their wives….

I believe that due to the old ways, it was a neccesaty for women, that they needed a husband to take care of them so to speak..
The men were the land owners, the men really ran everything it seemed. to me this way was for the preservation of the womens life.
Besides people have needs. the need for companionship among other things.. so if there were only a few decent men what were the women to do?
It is very puzzling, cause Jesus cleary was teaching to do away with this way of doing things, and paul made the statement that I feel shows that he also understood that things weren't meant to be this way. when he said " the older men should have only one wife" he set this as a criteria for those who would take the lead is the way i understand it. while not condeming the other since it seemed very common.

This has alwys puzzeled me until I realized that God doesn't want people to be unhappy he just wants them to understand whats the best choice and choose it.

And besides It doesn't seem fair to me for either gender right now.
at least not where I live. not equally numbered, not mentally balanced, not mature enough, yet they all have the same yearning to find that special someone.. and it seems that women all want the same man here, so that leaves room for for this type of thing in our modern day. sttrange indeed..

oh boy....

In my humble, yet correct opinion, one is enough...

I read it, too, "Prop." And, I thought to myself, ... "Now there's a guy who knows where his bread is buttered."

A humbling of the women, which have grown too haugthy, that much to me would be obvious (and about what a lot women today actually need). But I'm not too savvy to give scriptures, sorry CP. I know a lot of cultures still do practice Polygamy. :read:

Hey Prop,

Good to see you are behavin' yourself.

In Genesis Adam and Eve were monogomous from what we can tell, and it says that a man must leave his mother and father to become one flesh with his wife. Not wives....Abraham took many wifes, and so did others in Genesis, Israel (Jacob) had two because in a way he was tricked into it. He wanted Rachel and got Leah, so married both sisters. I think the Polygamy was originally a way of populating the Earth, but as time wore one we saw just as many monogomous couples as pologamous...so I guess part would be choice, part would have been individual family tradition...right now the Earth couldn't support Polygamy! Let's face it! We're overpopulating as it is! But as for the scripture in Isaiah, having read Isaiah, I tend to agree partially with serafina that it seems to be a humbling of women,:worthy: and though it might be a metaphor, if war and famine and pestilence does continually kill a third of mankind then maybe there will be a man shortage and woman, as Jurrasic Park so bluntly put it, inherits the Earth. :cheer: :P Just kidding, but in time it may become necessary to travel in "packs", we'll see.
