A former Jehovah's Witness elder was sentenced today in a San Jose courtroom to 12 years in state prison for the repeated molestation of a young congregant.

Armando Ortiz, 36, stared intensely at the ground throughout his hearing, in which he addressed the court in Spanish.

Ortiz gave a list of personal, financial and immigration problems that plagued him during the 2001 to 2003 molestations of his friend's daughter, who was 8 to 11 years old at the time.

Ortiz claimed his position as an elder in the church made it difficult to seek help for his many problems at the time of the crimes.

During time the crimes were committed, Ortiz was living in the home of a close friend and was involved in a romantic affair with the man's wife, who was the mother of the victim.

He has moved into the family's home because of his financial difficulties.

Judge Brian Walsh acknowledged Ortiz's comments but said they were nothing more than a list of excuses and said he did not hear an apology to a girl to whom Ortiz most likely caused irreparable damage.

"I think that justice was done and that it was a fair sentence,'' Deputy District Attorney Sumerle Davis said. "It's a very unfortunate and sad situation.''

The victim's family has since moved out of state to "put this behind them,'' Davis said.

Ortiz received the maximum 12-year sentence for continued sexual abuse of a child and will have to register as a sex offender.

Actually, Micah, the APA (American Psychiatric Association) already refers to pedophilia as a mental health issue and a "disability." These are the folks whose expertise is relied upon during court hearings and trials.

Perhaps you will see pedophiles receiving priority parking privileges in "handicapped-only" parking spaces in your lifetime.

Well, Gus, at least we'd know where to look for them! As it is, they roam the streets and live within close proximity to all of us,incognito, and all under legal protection.:( Let's pray Jehovah brings his kingdom soon. We need it so much, don't we? :(

True enough, Sis Grateful. It wasn't long ago when a young girl disappeared in the neighborhood in which I lived. The police did a round-up of the "usual suspects"...the registered sex offenders in the area. To my surprise, there were 80 of them...and the area wasn't all that large.

The kingdom is here now...one person at a time. Its citizens walk amongst the dead of this world in stark contrast to their surroundings; but most people are too busy to recognize them.

At a minimun Child molesters should be kept in prison for the rest of their natural lives. To bad governments don't have the will to do so.
