"Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for their fathers used to treat the false prophets in the same way."
Why would men speaking "well of you" be a bad thing? As Jesus revealed, the false prophets were 'tickling the ears' of God's people and prophesying 'pleasant things' to them, instead of standing firm for the justice of God's wrath which would bring them to repentance. One true prophet of God, Jeremiah, wrote many insightful words in reference to this very thing -
Jeremiah 5:31
The prophets prophesy falsely, And the priests rule on their own authority; And My people love it so! But what will you do at the end of it?
Jeremiah 23:16-17, 21-27, 31-32
Thus says the LORD of hosts, "Do not listen to the words of the prophets who are prophesying to you! They are leading you into futility; They speak a vision of their own imagination, Not from the mouth of the LORD. They keep saying to those who despise Me, 'The LORD has said, "You will have peace"'; And as for everyone who walks in the stubbornness of his own heart, They say, 'Calamity will not come upon you.'
"I did not send these prophets, But they ran. I did not speak to them, But they prophesied. But if they had stood in My council, Then they would have announced My words to My people, And would have turned them back from their evil way And from the evil of their deeds. Am I a God who is near," declares the LORD, "And not a God far off? Can a man hide himself in hiding places So I do not see him?" declares the LORD. "Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?" declares the LORD. "I have heard what the prophets have said who prophesy falsely in My name, saying, 'I had a dream, I had a dream!' "How long? Is there anything in the hearts of the prophets who prophesy falsehood, even these prophets of the deception of their own heart, who intend to make My people forget My name by their dreams which they relate to one another, just as their fathers forgot My name because of Baal?
"Behold, I am against the prophets," declares the LORD, "who use their tongues and declare, 'The Lord declares.' "Behold, I am against those who have prophesied false dreams," declares the LORD, "and related them and led My people astray by their falsehoods and reckless boasting; yet I did not send them or command them, nor do they furnish this people the slightest benefit," declares the LORD.
Another of God's true prophets, Isaiah, also did not withhold the 'hard to bear' truth that was meant to bring about repentant hearts in God's people and turn them
back to Him -
Isaiah 5:20
Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness; Who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!
Isaiah 30:9-11, 15
For this is a rebellious people, false sons, Sons who refuse to listen To the instruction of the LORD; Who say to the seers, "You must not see visions"; And to the prophets, "You must not prophesy to us what is right, Speak to us pleasant words, Prophesy illusions. Get out of the way, turn aside from the path, Let us hear no more about the Holy One of Israel." For thus the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel, has said, "In repentance and rest you will be saved, In quietness and trust is your strength." But you were not willing,
Isaiah 59:12-13
For our transgressions are multiplied before You, And our sins testify against us; For our transgressions are with us, And we know our iniquities: Transgressing and denying the LORD, And turning away from our God, Speaking oppression and revolt, Conceiving in and uttering from the heart lying words.
Because of his faithfulness in sounding a warning even in the midst of severe opposition, God granted Isaiah special insight -
Isaiah 59:15-16
Yes, truth is lacking; And he who turns aside from evil makes himself a prey. Now the LORD saw, And it was displeasing in His sight that there was no justice. And He saw that there was no man, And was astonished that there was no one to intercede; Then His own arm brought salvation to Him, And His righteousness upheld Him.
Isaiah 52:10
The LORD has bared His holy arm In the sight of all the nations, That all the ends of the earth may see The salvation of our God.
Yes, Christ Jesus, the Messiah, would bring much needed salvation to all mankind! He would turn the hearts of the repentant back to the Way of the One True God, a righteous path of light, life, and truthfulness!
:heartbeat: John 14:6
Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me."
:heartbeat: Philippians 2:9-11
For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
:heartbeat: Acts 4:12
"And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved."
