Ugh....

We developed a moderate leak in the pipes under our bathroom in our mobile home that caused a significant amount of damage to our bathroom floor. Hubby and a friend crawled underneath, found the problem, shut off the water and went to work repairing the broken connection.

Mind you, we aren't exactly rich (after all, people with money do not live in mobile homes), but we had some money we could put into this. Hubby and friend bought the necessary items and tried to repair the pipe. THEN....another pipe connection, the intake to the toilet, BUSTED and began spraying water everywhere underneath the trailer!

And of course, by this time all the stores were closed, but that didn't really mean much because we're out of money to buy more repair items anyway. UGH!

So we had to shut off the water throughout the entire home to prevent the leaks from causing more damage to the floor. Sure we have enough drinking water in the fridge, but we have no working toilet!!!. Eeesh!

And...my work hours were cut yet again, so we don't know when we'll have money to finish the job.

Between the pipe repair and the floor repair (it's a large area that's sagging quite deeply), we're talking an easy $500 -$600 project, money we simply don't have.

I know this is a long shot here, but does anyone have any suggestions on how to get out of this situation as cheaply as possible??? :help:

Hi there MM ...

I just saw your post and wanted to give you some possible suggestions ... not sure if you will except them since you were once a witness but I have been helped by other denominations more than by my own kind.

Some smaller churches have moneys and personal help set aside for non members, like fuel help , wood chopping, snow shoveling etc ... I have also gotten help specifically from young mormon elders over the years, strong young men eager to help wherever they can .. Please don't be to embaresed to ask for help, many are just waiting to do a service for others that will make them happy.... also do you maybe have a baler facility in your area ... my husband works at one and he brings home plywood , metal , pipes you name it including lawnmowers and BBQ grills etc ... if we need something he goes there first and looks around .

Also lumber yards , home depot , lowes, etc .. might have some wood, or plywood laying around not up to code or pieces that have damaged corners or knots in them that will make them extremely cheap ... talk to one of their employee's , they should be able to direct you to the right person to talk to.

I hope and pray that things will get better for you real soon ..

with much affection, LC ;):heartbeat:

Yeah, late into the wee hours overnight we had discussed the possibility of church help. Our church does have a stewardship fund set aside for families who find themselves in financial need -- and we're hoping they'll be able to help us (I mean, who knows...maybe other families have come along and depleted the funds already). If they can't help, we'll explore your other suggestions. :giverose:

I'm a little anxious about asking the Mormons though -- I don't want to give them the impression that we're interested in their religion, yet I don't want them to feel like we're using them either. But if they are willing to help....

But you are interested in their religion, just the same as they are interested in yours, Tami.

I once knew a resident living in the worst part of town who said to me as we passed by the local panhandlers, "Don't ever give a nickle to those people. They're the ones who make a business out of begging. If you want to give to the worthy, give it to the bottle collectors, dumpster divers and others who are too embarassed to ask."

Also, don't be afraid to ask your neighbours. You'd be surprised where a little help can lead in getting to know who they really are.

Now I won't say, "Keep warm and well fed," but pray you'll be led by the spirit we all share to those near you who truly care.

Cheers,

sw

Hi muse,
For many years it was my occupation to fix problems exactly like yours. I wish I was there in person to help you. I could easilly replace your floor and pipes in one day. In the meantime, you might like to know that you can flush the toilet by quickly pouring in the bowl about 1 1/2 gal of water. For the floor I recomend pressure treated plywood that wont fall apart if it gets wet in the future. Cut back the existing junk board till you get to good. Install new joists boards under it (pressure treated), and screw it down. Remove the toilet first of course, it not hard really. Hopefully you can leave the tub or shower. It might be better to just reinforce those areas if they are saging, rather then pulling everything out. Many pipe problems can be fixed easilly with the right rubber hose and hose clamps! If you have specific questions, just ask.

I suspect in England we call this Marine Plywood. Go for three quarter inch minimum.
From this distance I can only pray at the moment.
