Good Morning, Everyone! :hibye: Daily Scriptural Text for Tuesday, February 13, 2007:
8 When you build a new house, make a parapet around your roof so that you may not bring the guilt of bloodshed on your house if someone falls from the roof.
--Deuteronomy 22:8, New International Version.
Complementary Scriptures:
18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.
19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord.
--Ephesians 5:18, 19, ibid.
__________
My comment: I remember, as a youngster, hearing this verse read; and thinking they were saying, ...
"When you build a new house, take a parakeet around your roof."  :D
Anyhoo, what may we learn from this Scriptural text, today? Foresight. Anticipatory thought and precautionary action. A "parapet" was a little fence built around the roof (which was flat) of Israelite homes. Much the same as if you had a balcony on the second or third floor of your home, you would have it enclosed in some manner, for safety.
3 A sensible person sees danger and takes cover, but the inexperienced keep going and are punished.--Proverbs 22:3, Holman Christian Standard Bible. (See also Proverbs 27:12.)
The "wise" (NLV) person, ... the "shrewd" (NWT) person, ... the  "prudent" (AMP) person, ... the "sensible" person (HCSB above), ... is one who can engage in healthy "what if" thinking. (There is definitely an unhealthy kind, too!) Healthy "what if" thinking enables a person to reason within themselves, ... "If I do so-and-so, what are the most likely scenarios to develop, as a result? (Maybe we should call it "If/What" thinking.) ;) Being able to anticipate likely developments, ... before their actual occurrence, ... and, possibly, even assigning them a likelihood of probability (on a 1 to 100 scale, or something similar), ... is always going to place the Christian in the best possible position of looking out for the best interests of, -- not only themselves, -- but, also, of their fellow Christian and their fellow man, at large.
24 Let each one keep seeking, not his own [advantage], but that of the other person.
--1 Corinthians 10:24, New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures.
It's pretty simple, really. We don't want anyone "falling off of our roof," now, do we? They may get hurt; and/or we may get sued. So, if we always make sure that we have adequate "parapets," then we can walk around with our parakeet, and not worry about a thing!

I like Parakeet!  It adds a whole new dimension to the scripture!
Funny how uncommon, common sense is.  I guess because alot of the time it involves taking others into consideration.  Doing things with forsight.  Not something exactly genetic these day.
Thanks for your comments iso.  They got me to pondering.
