Bethel Boy has been given a week's time out for repeatedly disregarding the requests to confine his "Trinitarian" and "Jesus is God" posts to the controversy room.
We can't know for sure how someone will be when they join - trinitarianism or WatchTowerism or whatever isn't the problem, but the deliberate disruption of the cafe's atmosphere.

Since BB seems now to be annexed to the controversy room, would it be special section for new members for, say, their first twelve or so posts or weeks? All members could read it and write to it, but the newer ones could only read the other sections during that period. Perhaps have an arrangement where limited posts might be passed to other sections after "passing through customs" checking.

I know it sounds authoritative - not the kind of atmosphere for people who feel already confined by their religion - and it is a real problem for those who are quite quiet and don't post much, and wouldn't seem as welcoming - we'd have to exercise our welcoming to newcomers more actively to keep them encouraged - but it would greatly reduce the danger of disruption to the board as a whole, keep the atmosphere more harmonious.

Hi Truthseeker1 :hibye:

You're so right. My suggestion really relates to the difference in nature between this board and faith-specific boards.

Were one to post a comment on a Catholic board saying that purgatory was nonsense, they would just ignore it. Similarly a post on a WatchTower-loyal board saying that the WatchTower had hidden evidence over 1914 - it wouldn't even raise a comment. Nobody would debate, they'd just ignore it - everyone there believes the same things and don't listen to contrary views.

Here. though. there are lots of different people with different beliefs, many looking for a safe haven, trying to recover from problems and many anxious to discuss and reason and learn. So when an intransigent viewpoint comes to this board - as happens - it has the opposite effect. It isn't ignored, people do try to reason - "perhaps its right after all" - but the actual intransigence changes the feeling on the board, it becomes like a brick wall rather than something to reason with. It can be nauseous, deliberate, make people leave the thread, even feel that reasoning simply isn't worth it. It isn't healthy and it doesn't just go awa.

I suppose I'm trying to find some way where the inquisitive nature of people can be encouraged without harm, where we can speak confidently in our beliefs but without the evident - and I stress evident - disruptive intention of some postings.

Suggestions anyone?

As I reread your post I am reminded of my more youthful, naïve days when I would ask, “Why doesn’t everyone see it?” Despite dissonance ringing between my ears I would volunteer to trade brains with anyone up for the challenge to question what they formerly believed.

But now I am along in years—not to say this is in itself a standard of wisdom—but I can say I am wiser than I was then, and I will probably become wiser the more I apply my heart to reason. After all, I will always be on a learning curve until I am equal to God, something I say only with tongue in cheek.:friends:

Seriously though, Sis. Acts5v29. A valid point being raised here is how much are we bringing in orthodox, preconceived dogma from our former insights. While truth has a magnetic attraction it repels those who are either in fear of it or not ready for its illumination. It cannot be forced—not like religion. Religion is the comfort food of those wanting a resting place from their search for ultimate truth. Unfortunately most of us either have not the time or energy or desire to know all of it and resign ourselves to interpretations of those we perceive more intelligent to us. But I say that holy spirit given to us by God through Christ is unique and makes us unique, and if we cease to be humble after receiving it we are in just as much danger in receiving a wicked spirit that imitates the true one—which is good reason for us to always recheck its source since all humanity is fallible until proven right or wrong in context with the inspired word.

That, in a nutshell seems to cover what this discussion board is all about. Some of us might be closer to the truth than others, but can’t force our awareness on others without offending belief. So, patience, friends. You are all loved, but we are striving to keep the ‘dogs of circumcision’ at bay until they rethink their Christian manners. (Philippians 3:2-4)

Love,

sw
