We have ten names so far of people who have suddenly decided to put links in their signatures to adverts, vitamins and plastic surgery in the Philippines.
Be vigilant as to who we welcome, we seem to be under a spam attack. :spam:
We will work through the names and ban them.
And do not go to the Philippines for plastic surgery.

Hey guys. We've being blitzed by spammers in the last few days. Please send us the names of any that you spot. I think we'll have a mass banning on Sunday or Monday. They are being warned today to get rid of those commercial signatures....or else!

Some are really sneaky and come on with spiritual-sounding signatures and then switch them to link to their commercial web pages. They are also great flatterers so beware!
Please don't welcome these ones to the cafe. It might be a good idea not to reply to them unless to discourage their attempts to drown the board in spam.

They do this for backlinking purposes - the philosophy being, the more backlinks a site has, the higher up they will be on Google. (They do this on lots of forums.) I guess your site has reached a certain Google PageRank level where these spammers consider it worthwhile.
Some people will just join forums and put the link in their forum profile, rather than actually posting. I recommend deleting these profiles, or limiting signatures until, say, 15 or 20 posts.
Most spammers won't bother hanging around for 20 posts.

It's not the policy of the board to allow commercial links. We could be swamped with twittering spammers and we may not have the bandwidth to deal with it.
Plus the fact that most of these guys are not really interested in being a part of this forum. If they are serious about participating they will remove these links.

Thanks for the heads up peeps! We're checking these out. Some of them had links in their signatures while others had a link in the text.

Just keep spotting and hit the report button. They are being dealt with.
Here's a follow-up on the spamming situation. We're pretty sure that most of these are spam bots and their names are computer-generated. We also have developed a fairly simple method of catching them before they fully activate their commercial links.
In case some still slip by us we'll need the members to report any such activity.
The names (111 of them) in the list of ones that have been banned have been removed from the member's list as well. This (hopefully) will reduce the attractiveness of our board to these bots.
