Hi luci-g,
While it is likely true as they say,"the Christian group is among the most harassed religious minorities in the territories of the former Soviet Union" the colour of this persecution has changed in my mind.
Consider what was said in our defense by officials of the Jehovah’s Witnesses centre: “Such a decision may lead to the legalisation of illegal actions against peaceful citizens who wish to worship God in accordance with their own conscience and the principles of the sacred scriptures, the Bible."
Which is all very well and good if we did indeed allow "peaceful citizens who wish to worship God in accordance with their own conscience and the principles of the sacred scriptures, the Bible." We don't. We harrass those whose consciences might differ over indoctrination of such things as tobacco and medical use of blood. While I might agree that tobacco and blood are not my choice, by legislating these things, they do so to dividing the "dill and cummin" and we become no better than other extremists who make up doctrine to control their masses.
Maybe one day my dream will come true and I will see all of the battle-worn "conscience-keepers" hiding in one place ready to be martyred for the faith, my true brothers of peace.
Love,
sw
