My dear friend and constant companion, Silenzio:

You, Silenzio, have been good for me. When I am alone and vulnerable, you embrace and guide me along a shore whose sand crunches in muted whisper beneath my feet. I gaze to my right and observe that the roiling and tearing Pacific breakers have become a smooth expanse of glass stretching toward my infinity.

Soundless, these noisy visions appear as thunder to my eyes. Offshore, fog undulates precipitously in my direction, wishing to join in my audience with her sister waves. I cannot hear so do not listen. To see is, of itself, sufficient. My ears have been stopped forever. Inner churning has forever ceased. Vision alone will guide me in the direction of an unknown that I no longer fear.

Silenzio. You have been chosen for me ...

You heal me.

Ever yours,

Sordo
Dear CoCo:hibye:

Who is Silenzio?

Sounds like my redneck "perception" of an opera story? Or maybe, poetry?

Yours or someone else's? I am greatly intriqued.

The bible expresses we learn by faith an not by sight. But we are told to use an ear to hear in Revelations. I sense the hearing is even spiritual.

The tragedy or blessing of a loss of hearing? Which one is it?

Greetings and thanks, Deborah and Stephen:

It's always a pleasure to get replies to my stories and poetry. "Silenzio" - Italian, for "Silence" - is addressed by "Sordo" - likewise Italian, for "Deaf."

I wrote this snippet after viewing The House of Sand and Fog. It was the visuals rather than the storyline that intrigued me. I imagined a deaf man "hearing" the effects of surf and wind in a visual manner. He is neither bitter nor angry because he never actually lost his hearing; he was born deaf and simply imagines the sound of crashing waves. He looks toward his infinity and, as a consequence, is as tranquil as the seascape is not.

Gratefully,

CoCo
