Because the Father has a son.....a son that he has anointed, Jesus; our Lord.
Lets look at the Psalm and see what it is about who is speaking and what is being said.
Psalm 102
A break down of this Psalm would be like this
1. Verses 1-11 a plea for Divine help
2. Verses 12-22 A perspective of God's Sovereignty and His Eternality
3. Verses 23-28 A prayer for longer Life.
1 Hear my prayer, O LORD,
And let my cry come to You.
2 Do not hide Your face from me in the day of my trouble;
Incline Your ear to me;
In the day that I call, answer me speedily.
( He prays to YHWH to hear his prayer and to answer it speedily)
3 For my days are consumed like smoke,
And my bones are burned like a hearth.
4 My heart is stricken and withered like grass,
So that I forget to eat my bread.
5 Because of the sound of my groaning
My bones cling to my skin.
6 I am like a pelican of the wilderness;
I am like an owl of the desert.
7 I lie awake,
And am like a sparrow alone on the housetop.
8 My enemies reproach me all day long;
Those who deride me swear an oath against me.
9 For I have eaten ashes like bread,
And mingled my drink with weeping,
10 Because of Your indignation and Your wrath;
For You have lifted me up and cast me away.
11 My days are like a shadow that lengthens,
And I wither away like grass.
( His prayer ends with his life being like that of the grass or the lenghtening shadow that is coming near to it's end. )
( the Psalmist now shifts his focus from Earth to Heaven from his dilemma to God. He basks in God's Eternal nature and the eternal outworking of God's redemptive plan. )
12 But You, O LORD, shall endure forever,
And the remembrance of Your name to all generations.
13 You will arise and have mercy on Zion;
For the time to favor her,
Yes, the set time, has come.
14 For Your servants take pleasure in her stones,
And show favor to her dust.
15 So the nations shall fear the name of the LORD,
And all the kings of the earth Your glory.
16 For the LORD shall build up Zion;
He shall appear in His glory.
17 He shall regard the prayer of the destitute,
And shall not despise their prayer.
18 This will be written for the generation to come,
That a people yet to be created may praise the LORD.
19 For He looked down from the height of His sanctuary;
From heaven the LORD viewed the earth,
20 To hear the groaning of the prisoner,
To release those appointed to death,
21 To declare the name of the LORD in Zion,
And His praise in Jerusalem,
22 When the peoples are gathered together,
And the kingdoms, to serve the LORD.
23 He weakened my strength in the way;
He shortened my days.
24 I said, “O my God,
Do not take me away in the midst of my days;
Your years are throughout all generations.
25 Of old You laid the foundation of the earth,
And the heavens are the work of Your hands.
26 They will perish, but You will endure;
Yes, they will all grow old like a garment;
Like a cloak You will change them,
And they will be changed.
27 But You are the same,
And Your years will have no end.
28 The children of Your servants will continue,
And their descendants will be established before You.â€
Now in Hebrews 1 the Writer wants us to see the Superiority of Christ.
To #1. The prophets. #2. The Angels #3. The Old Covenant
When I read verse 1 it reminds me of what we are taught in 1 Peter 1
10 Of this salvation the prophets have inquired and searched carefully, who prophesied of the grace that would come to you, 11 searching what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ who was in them was indicating when He testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow.
( So here we are told that " The Spirit of Christ " was in Them
" When HE testified " of the sufferings of Christ and the Glories that would follow. It appears that the Spirit of Christ/The Holy Spirit/The Spirit of God are the same person. )
Hebrews 1
1 God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets,
( In the Last days ( the time of the Messiah ) "God" " Spoke " to " US " " By " His Son "
Why is Christ Superior to The Angels and Prophets,
God The Father Tells us, actually sings us the praises of His Son and what He has done
God the Son, as we are told here, is God, stamped out in Human flesh in His Human nature He was totally like you and I. He wept,bled, sweat,learned,slept etc.
In His nature as God.
He spoke and stopped the wind and waves,walked on water,knew peoples inner most thoughts,or voice within them,Healed,brought the dead to life,did miracles etc.
So we have in Heb 1 both terms that relate to His Humanity and terms that relate to His Deity .
He was above the Angels in that He created them but He lowered Himself in coming in appearance as a man deity adding humanity.
In the following verses God the Father is praising God the Son. the same song sung to YHWH by the Psalmist The Father Sings to the Son!!!
8 But to the Son He says:
“ Your throne, O God, is forever and ever;
A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom.
9 You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness;
Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You
With the oil of gladness more than Your companions.â€
10 And: ( The son is being called LORD By the Father !!! )
“ You, LORD, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth,
And the heavens are the work of Your hands.
11 They will perish, but You remain;
And they will all grow old like a garment;
12 Like a cloak You will fold them up,
And they will be changed.
But You are the same,
And Your years will not fail
