Comet smashes hole in Jupiter the size of Earth...
By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 11:24 AM on 21st July 2009

An amateur astronomer has discovered a hole in Jupiter the size of Earth, after the planet was apparently hit by a comet.
Australian Anthony Wesley was using a home-made telescope in the yard of his rural home in Murrumbateman, near Canberra, when he spotted a dark scar had suddenly appeared on the side of Jupiter at 1am yesterday morning.

Scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California then gathered evidence of an impact, possibly from a comet strike, using images from the infrared telescope in Hawaii.

The images, taken by the space agency's infrared telescope in Hawaii, come on the 15th anniversary of another comet strike.

In 1994, Jupiter was bombarded by pieces of the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9.

Scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena captured the new images after receiving a tip from an amateur astronomer the night before.

Excitement, Fear Precede Solar Eclipse Superstitions Surround Rare Event in Asia
By MICHAEL CASEY, AP

posted: 3 HOURS 19 MINUTES AGOcomments: 306filed under: Science News, World NewsPRINT|E-MAILMOREText SizeAAABANGKOK (July 20) -- Millions of people across Asia will witness the longest total solar eclipse that will happen this century, as vast swaths of India and China, the entire city of Shanghai and southern Japanese islands are plunged into darkness Wednesday for about five minutes. Streams of amateur stargazers and scientists are traveling long distances to witness the once-in-a-lifetime event.

Astronomers hope the eclipse will unlock clues about the sun, while an astrologer in Myanmar predicts it could usher in chaos. Some in India are advising pregnant relatives to stay indoors to follow a centuries-old tradition of avoiding the sun's invisible rays.
The eclipse will appear first at dawn in India's Gulf of Khambhat just north of the metropolis of Mumbai. It will move east across India, Nepal, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Bhutan and China before hitting the Pacific. The eclipse will cross some southern Japanese islands and be last visible from land at Nikumaroro Island in the South Pacific nation of Kiribati. Elsewhere, a partial eclipse will be visible in much of Asia.
For astronomers, it will be a chance for a prolonged view of the sun's corona, a white ring 600,000 miles from the sun's surface. The previous total eclipse, in August 2008, was two minutes and 27 seconds. This one will last 6 minutes and 39 seconds at its maximum point.

I woke up to high winds here in AK.
Hi Freyd,
What you posted is a bit of an anticlimax compared to the words of Jesus!

Jupiter, the Solar system comet and asteroid sweeper, is there for that very purpose, to stop these objects hitting earth.

Doesn't it require a telescope to see the event you mentioned?

And: Solar eclipses have occur regularly throughout history.

Now if a comet came very close to earth and its tail split three ways, in the shape of a huge cross and filled the night sky, you might have something to talk about. :)

I often wake up with the wind! :)

But is it solar wind Derek?
hot stuff :fart:
I was studying astronomy the year of the moon landing. (Now you can all figure out how old I am) but what I cannot figure out is why astronauts would undertake a trip to the moon at the peak of an eleven year sunspot and solar flare cycle.

It is going to take solar flares, Halley's comet out of cycle, and a bunch of other celestial events to make me think the end is nigh.

I remember as a WT teen buying and hiding makeup, particularly mascara, as I had very long eyelashes. Gotta have long lashes and mascara in a FEMA camp. Now if they arrest me all I will be able to offer is solar wind.
Hi Vicky,
I think they did the trip then to beat the Russians to the moon.

Did NASA Accidentally “Nuke” Jupiter?

By Richard C. Hoagland

On September 21, 2003 NASA deliberately directed its amazing, still-functioning Galileo spacecraft to make one final, 108,000 mph suicidal plunge into Jupiter’s vast atmosphere. Thus ended the incredibly successful eight-year unmanned NASA Galileo mission … which had returned against all odds an array of phenomenal new information on Jupiter and its “mini-solar system of moons” … in a literal, most fitting “blaze of glory.”....On that night, an amateur astronomer in Belgium, Olivier Meeckers...........

why do you think this is funny? 60 mile an hour winds is funny? The sun does cause strange weather. This happens all the time.

Hi N.H.
Your too serious, that's your problem!:)

I am not serious...I can't ever get my icon smilies to work, and it makes me seem serious. :dontknow:

HEY!! It works now! All this time it didnt work, and all of a sudden it does? Wierd!

....see. You're getting funnier already! :giggle:
The Solar System is breaking out in spots.

First Jupiter took a smack from a passing asteroid or comet, manifesting as a dark scar in the Jovian atmosphere, and now Venus is sporting a brilliant white spot in its southern polar region.

In an alert to fellow amateur astronomers, Venus observer Frank Melillo reports on his images captured on 19 July: “I have seen bright spots before but this one is an exceptional bright and quite intense area.”

He suggests that it could be explained as an atmospheric effect, but could it be a sign of volcanic activity at the planet’s surface? Venus is covered in a thick cloak of clouds which prevents any visible observation of the surface. Instead, radar is used to map the surface, but volcanic activity has never been observed directly.

“A volcanic eruption would be nice, but let’s wait and find out!” says Venus specialist Dr Sanjay Limaye of the University of Wisconsin. “An eruption would have to be quite energetic to get a cloud this high.” Furthermore, at a latitude of 50 degrees south, the spot lies outside the region of known volcanoes on Venus.

Melillo comments that the spot will not be seen again as intense as it is now, thanks to the rapid rotation of the planet’s atmosphere. “I hope that someone will image Venus on Thursday when this part of the atmosphere is facing us again,” he says.

Further observations will help shed light on the genesis of the bright spot and how it evolves as the atmosphere churns over.

We have to remind you that all incoming Space Rocks are now classified!

Speeding Stars Baffle Scientists
By Clara Moskowitz, Space.com

(Aug. 5) - Stars in a distant galaxy move at stunning speeds — greater than 1 million mph, astronomers have revealed.
These hyperactive stars move at about twice the speed of our sun through the Milky Way, because their host galaxy is very massive, yet strangely compact. The scene, which has theorists baffled, is 11 billion light-years away. It is the first time motions of individual stars have been measured in a galaxy so distant.

While the stars' swiftness is notable, stars in other galaxies have been observed to travel at similarly high speeds. In those situations, it was usually because they were interlopers from outside, or circling close to a black hole.

But in this case, the stars' high velocities help astronomers confirm that the galaxy they belong to really is as massive as earlier data suggested.

The compact nature of this and similar galaxies in the faraway early universe is puzzling to scientists, who don't yet understand why some young, massive galaxies are about five times smaller than their counterparts today.

"A lot of people were thinking we had overestimated these masses in the past," said Yale University astronomer Pieter van Dokkum, leader of the new study. "But this confirms they are extremely massive for their size. These galaxies are indeed as bizarre as we thought they were."
