Hebrews 12:7 ---
Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father?

In context - Hebrews 12:4-11 ---
In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. And you have forgotten that word of encouragement that addresses you as sons:
"My son, do not make light of the Lord's discipline,
and do not lose heart when he rebukes you,
because the Lord disciplines those he loves,
and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son."
Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? If you are not disciplined (and everyone undergoes discipline), then you are illegitimate children and not true sons. Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of our spirits and live!
Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

A few words about discipline ---

1 Corinthians 11:32

When we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned with the world.

2 Timothy 1:7
For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.

Titus 1:8
Rather he must be hospitable, one who loves what is good, who is self-controlled, upright, holy and disciplined.

Like any good father, our heavenly Father sometimes has to mete out discipline and correction. I didn't believe my Mom when I was small, that discipline was really 'for my own good'(lol), but when I matured I could clearly see the prudence and wisdom of her disciplined upright moral lessons - just what I really needed. Maturity is no security against making mistakes, and our Heavenly Father makes allowances for His children who misstep and come to Him begging forgiveness in all earnestness.

Revelation 3:19
Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest, and repent.
