After mulling this over in my mind, I'm at a loss. I remember having this conversation with a Catholic workmate (some 40+ years ago) when I first encountered the Jesus=God doctrine. I used this scripture to point out Jesus' lower position to God since the devil used the kingdoms of the world to tempt him.
So my Catholic friend went back to his priest for an answer. He then came back with what the priest told him ... that Jesus' objection, "it is to Him (God) alone you must render sacred service" was Jesus counselling Satan that it should be the other way around, that the devil should be worshipping Jesus.
To me this was a most absurd response since it negated the entire temptation attempt, making its point moot. Anyway, I guess that's how Catholic theology reasons and I doubt my opinion would change since I still think it would be silly to have anyone believe that Satan would imagine Jesus to be weakened by something knowingly false. After all, the devil knows his scriptures too. :read:
