"Turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, making them an example to those who afterward would live ungodly" - 2 Peter 2:6

One can identify the location of these destroyed cities from satellite images. The image on the bottom right is a view in one of the streets of Gomorrah. There are millions of brimstone balls (with burn rings) throughout the ashen remains of these cities. They have been tested to be 95% pure sulfur with some magnesium and other impurities that increase the burning temperature which is over 5000 F. The ash of burnt sulfur is heavier than the original material that was burnt (This is why the ash is still here today).
It should be noted that geological and meteorological phenomena cannot produce brimstone fireballs; Volcanic sulfur is instantly turned into a gas, and meteors have never been found to contain high percentages of sulfur... and if there were such a meteor that reached our atmosphere it would instantly be turned into a gas. The brimstone fireballs would have had to have been manifested within our atmosphere directly above the destroyed cities.
