Are the Catholics still against the people having the Bible?

The Council of Toulouse 1229 ...
We prohibit also that the laity should be permitted to have the books of the Old or the New Testament; unless anyone from motives of devotion should wish to have the Psalter or the Breviary for divine offices or the hours of the blessed Virgin; but we most strictly forbid their having any translation of these books. ...

In 1713 the papal bull Unigenitus condemned the proposition that the Bible was for everyone.

Though they tried their hardest in past centuries, via persecution and even with vile death sentences upon publishers and owners;
It is clear that they haven't been able to stop it from becoming a widely available... Praise Jah !

My two cents.......Reminds me of the jw's. They post that big sign for all the world to see in Brooklyn saying "Read Your Bible Daily," but at their meetings they study the wt and other publications produced by the mythological FDS and quote the Bible when it agrees with their "commentaries."
Thanks, Freyd, for turning from the anti-Catholic, anti-pope rhetoric. It's not constructive. Faith being generally weak as it is, it seems that - ultimately - most people will substitute something as an intercessor because they don't "see" Jesus. Be it a pope, a watchtower, a Russell, a guru, or whatever talisman people choose; it all indicates a shortage in the faith department.

The Catholics have never been shy about saying that Catholic tradition is the equivalent of scripture. It's right out there, front and center. It's not a Holy See conspiracy against believers. Catholics believe it and accept it. So we can run around with our hair on fire hollering about the evils of the Catholic Church...or we can just not be one. I don't feel any pressure to believe Catholic tradition. Adults, like children, believe what they want to believe, what suits their fancy...whatever supports their personal agenda (most not even realizing they have one)...and if a person can articulate his thinking fairly well, he gets a measure of human respect - for what it's worth.

Most people do what they want...not what they need. Until folks can break down their own barriers to become reconciled to God by means of Jesus, we're all stuck in an endless cycle of false identities and labels. The fact that another's identification "upsets" us is an indicator that we're not quite there yet.
